FAQs

There are probably more similarities than differences between these distinct professions.

Chiropractors really specialise in treating spinal problems similar to osteopaths and work mainly in private practice. There are differences in techniques and approaches between the two professions as there will be between individual chiropractors. Chiropractors and osteopaths are qualified and trained to practice spinal manipulation.

Physiotherapists tend to work more in NHS/hospital settings, as well as privately, and can be more generalist, and are unlikely to specialise in the back and neck.

It is probably more important to find an individual who you get on with, or who may have a special interest in your particular problem.

Only if the spine is treated with “spinal manipulative therapy” would you expect to sometimes hear a “crack”. This is a normal effect that can be produced from any joint, including spinal joints, and is thought to be a bubble of gas within the joint popping under certain conditions. It is a harmless effect.
No. Chiropractors are qualified to assess, diagnose and offer treatment on their own. They will also be able to recognise when the patient is better served by seeing a doctor. Some doctors will recommend a visit to a chiropractor and consult chiropractors themselves.
This is impossible to answer briefly. Your chiropractor can advise you better once they are more familiar with your problem.

That is a good question to which there is no easy answer. It is something you can discuss at length with your chiropractor once they have assessed you, and diagnosed what type of problem you may have.
Just as you would attend a dentist every six months for check-ups and cleaning, many patients find it useful to schedule a regular appointment, to try and prevent the original trouble from returning. Other clients are happy enough to make an appointment if they experience a recurrence of a problem.
